Taipei, Aug. 16, 2026 13:48 — The National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with U.S. defense startup VATN Systems to accelerate the development of unmanned underwater systems.
NCSIST Deputy Director Lin Chun-tsun (林俊村) and VATN Systems co-founder and CEO Nelson Mills formalized the agreement, establishing a technical partnership focused on unmanned underwater vehicles and the promotion of innovation and system integration for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
NCSIST noted that as unmanned underwater technologies advance rapidly, AUVs can play a growing role in ocean monitoring, environmental surveys, and underwater reconnaissance. Expanding these capabilities is expected to strengthen Taiwan’s maritime surveillance and overall defense posture.
The institute emphasized that teaming with VATN Systems will combine international expertise with Taiwan’s industrial base and its government, academic, and research communities to drive AUV innovation and integration. The collaboration aims to speed up related technological development, enhance underwater reconnaissance, and bolster asymmetric warfare capacity and maritime defense resilience.
The partnership also seeks to deepen connections between Taiwan’s defense technology sector and the global industry ecosystem, supporting greater defense self-reliance and long-term sustainability in critical maritime domains.
