Bursa Malaysia marks 50 years of supporting Malaysia’s economic growth

Bursa Malaysia has celebrated its 50th anniversary, highlighting five decades of supporting economic development, business financing, job creation and investor participation.

At the exchange’s golden jubilee gala dinner in Kuala Lumpur, Bursa Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Farid Alias reflected on the institution’s evolution and its contribution to Malaysia’s capital market.

He said the incorporation of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange on Dec 14, 1976, was an important milestone in charting the country’s economic growth. The exchange provided a platform for free-market activity and capital raising while serving as an indicator of economic value creation.

Over the years, Malaysia’s capital market has helped finance companies, infrastructure and other developments across the country. Its impact can be seen in transport networks, electricity and water infrastructure, commercial buildings and businesses, according to Farid.

These investments have created employment, supported livelihoods and enabled companies to expand. At the same time, the market has given investors opportunities to participate in corporate and economic growth.

Adapting to a changing market

A significant stage in Bursa Malaysia’s development came in 2004, when it completed a demutualisation exercise. This transformed the exchange from a member-based organisation into a market operator, frontline regulator and publicly listed company.

Farid said successive generations of leaders and employees had responded to changing market requirements while safeguarding the trust and confidence on which the capital market depends. This capacity to adapt has helped Bursa Malaysia remain resilient and relevant through periods of growth, change and uncertainty.

He added that the exchange’s contribution reflects its purpose of “Creating Opportunities, Growing Value”, connecting businesses seeking capital with investors looking to participate in Malaysia’s development.

Recognising five decades of contributions

The anniversary celebration also honoured former chairmen, board and committee members, chief executives and senior management teams who guided the exchange through different stages of its history.

Farid acknowledged the contributions of prominent former leaders and capital-market figures, including Dato’ Nik Din, Tan Sri Amirsham, Datuk Shireen, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid, Tan Sri Azman Hashim, Tan Sri Rashid Hussein and Tan Sri Ong Liang Huat. He also noted that Tan Sri Azlan Hashim was unable to attend because of ill health.

Recognition was extended to generations of Bursa Malaysia employees, regulators, policymakers, intermediaries, listed companies, investors and exchange partners in Malaysia and abroad.

Farid said regulators and policymakers had played an essential role in establishing the frameworks and standards needed to maintain confidence in Malaysia’s capital market.

Building on a proud legacy

As Bursa Malaysia enters its next chapter, Farid said the institution has a responsibility to build on the legacy entrusted to it by previous generations.

The exchange is expected to continue adapting to market developments while promoting confidence, creating opportunities and supporting sustainable value creation. Its future role will remain closely connected to the growth of Malaysian companies, the participation of investors and the country’s wider economic progress.

Farid also thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for attending the anniversary celebration alongside members of Malaysia’s capital-market community.
