Liberia: Empowering Liberia’s Entrepreneurs: Mercy Corps and Partners Strengthen SME Ecosystem – FrontPageAfrica
Mercy Corps Liberia, working alongside key partners, has stepped up efforts to boost the capacity and confidence of small business owners and emerging entrepreneurs nationwide. The initiative is part of a broader push to cultivate a vibrant community of more than 10,000 entrepreneurs focused on innovation, resilience, and sustainable growth.
Building a Stronger SME Ecosystem
At the core of the effort is a dynamic platform where entrepreneurs can learn, connect, and grow. By bringing together investors, mentors, industry experts, and startup founders, the program aims to close long-standing gaps that have held back business success in Liberia—especially in access to skills, networks, and funding.

Such engagements are helping to shape an entrepreneurial environment that rewards creativity, informed decision-making, and long-term collaboration.
Why It Matters: Challenges Facing Liberian Entrepreneurs
Small and medium-sized enterprises—especially youth-led startups—have been essential to Liberia’s post-conflict recovery. Yet many founders still face persistent barriers when launching and managing their ventures. Research conducted in 2020 identified major causes of small business failure in the country, including:
- Gaps in entrepreneurial and technical skills
- Limited access to mentors and role models
- Weak business management capacity
- Inadequate financing and funding channels
These constraints often leave aspiring entrepreneurs without the tools or networks needed to build resilient, scalable businesses.
Partner Spotlight: Youth Entrepreneur Network – Liberia (YEN-L)
The Youth Entrepreneur Network – Liberia (YEN-L) is tackling these gaps by inspiring, supporting, and connecting young business leaders nationwide. With a mission to unleash the potential of Liberia’s youth in enterprise and innovation, YEN-L has become a key driver of ecosystem development.
In 2024, YEN-L hosted a landmark Youth Entrepreneurs Conference in Monrovia that convened intrapreneurs, startup founders, small business owners, investors, sponsors, and government stakeholders. Designed to translate ambition into action, the three-day program featured:
- Two intensive days of training on entrepreneurship, business management, and innovation
- One day of certification to recognize participants’ new skills and commitment
- A public business fair where entrepreneurs showcased products and services
A Growing National Community
Participants also joined the National Entrepreneur Community, an online network that brings together founders and small business owners across Liberia. Through this community, members can:
- Attend regular hangouts and peer learning sessions
- Receive guidance from seasoned business professionals
- Access mentorship, partnerships, and support systems
- Expand networks to unlock new markets and opportunities
Looking Ahead
By blending practical training, investor engagement, and an active national community, Mercy Corps and its partners are helping entrepreneurs move from idea to execution—and from survival to growth. As the initiative scales toward a 10,000-strong community, it is laying the groundwork for a more inclusive, innovative, and competitive private sector in Liberia.
