NCAA Approves Ogun Airport for Commercial Operations – Economi Confidential

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially granted a commercial operational license to the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in Ogun State. This significant development marks the beginning of commercial activities at the state-of-the-art facility.

The Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, Balang Godwin, confirmed this milestone. He emphasized that the issuance of the license now allows the airport to commence flight operations. “Yes, the license has been granted, and once that’s done, you can commence operation,” he stated. This confirmation indicates that once a certificate is issued, whether for an airline or an aerodrome, operations can begin, similar to what is happening in Ogun.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has heralded this development as a historic milestone, not only for Ogun State but for the entire nation. According to Governor Abiodun, this is the first instance in Nigeria where a newly constructed airport has received such certification under the country’s current regulatory framework.

The Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport has been issued an Aerodrome Reference Code of 3C and an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services Category 6 rating. Initially, the airport will facilitate daytime flights only, from sunrise to sunset. It will employ a non-precision approach for Runway 05/23 and support Area Navigation procedures.

Governor Abiodun also shared that an international logistics company has committed to operating two weekly cargo flights from London to the airport. Furthermore, there are plans to initiate passenger flights shortly, with initial routes including Abuja and Port Harcourt. “I had a meeting on Sunday with a company that wants to be flying two cargo flights from London to this airport on a weekly basis,” he noted, highlighting the airport’s potential.

Additionally, the airport has been designated as an alternate landing site for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, enhancing its strategic importance. The governor expressed confidence that the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport would soon emerge as a key driver of trade, investment, and tourism in the region.

Governor Abiodun enthusiastically stated, “With world-class infrastructure, international connectivity, and a strategic location, the Gateway International Airport will raise the bar for air travel in Nigeria and serve as a proud symbol of Ogun State’s progress.” This development positions the airport as a pivotal player in transforming the air travel landscape of Nigeria, further solidifying Ogun State’s reputation as a hub of growth and development.
