Strategic Outreach Fuels 10.5 Per Cent Surge in Goa Tourist Footfall: Govt
In the first quarter of 2025, Goa has celebrated a significant 10.5% increase in tourist visits compared to the same period in the previous year, with numbers reaching 28,51,554. This surge is attributed to the state’s strategic efforts in enhancing the tourism landscape, which includes improvements in air connectivity.
State Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte highlighted that in 2024, the tourist numbers for the same time frame stood at 25,80,155. He expressed gratification over this sustained growth, signaling Goa’s transformation from a seasonal beach locale to a destination with global connections and cultural richness throughout the year.
The success of this trend is linked to a well-devised strategy rolled out by the Department of Tourism that focuses on bolstering both core and emerging markets, enhancing international air routes, and diversifying the state’s tourism offerings. “Our success is not accidental; it is a result of deep partnerships, strategic planning, and consistent market outreach,” said Khaunte, emphasizing Goa’s evolution into a destination that is sustainable, connected, and offers meaningful visitor experiences.
Value-driven tourism, proactive governance, and shared prosperity are pivotal elements of Goa’s tourism approach. A spokesperson from the state tourism department acknowledged how strategic aviation partnerships have unlocked new potentials for visitor influx. New direct flight routes by Air India Express now connect Goa to Kuwait and Abu Dhabi, offering fresh opportunities by engaging Gulf carriers and tapping into Middle Eastern transit markets. This development addresses current bilateral limitations with coordination from the central government.
The state has made significant strides into new markets with targeted campaigns and participation in key global events, such as WTM London, ITB Asia in Singapore, Tashkent International Tourism Fair, and the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025 in Dubai. During WTM London, Goa was a proud part of the ‘Chalo India Global Diaspora Initiative,’ an Indian government initiative aimed at encouraging the Indian diaspora to introduce India to their foreign friends, aligning with Goa’s strategy of attracting high-value travelers and cultural ambassadors globally.
At ATM Dubai, strategic meetings with regional tourism stakeholders and the Consul General of India have reinforced plans for a long-term tourism bridge between the UAE and India. Goa’s positioning as a premium gateway is not only for leisure but also for cultural, wellness, and family travel segments.
Product diversification plays a crucial role in retaining tourist interest in the state. Initiatives like the Ekadasha Teertha spiritual circuit, wellness and Ayurveda retreats, hinterland adventures, and regenerative village experiences offer unique attractions. These initiatives particularly appeal to conscious travelers, global nomads, and off-season domestic tourists. Furthermore, monsoon travel packages are gaining popularity in Middle Eastern markets.
With tourist numbers generally dipping in April after Easter, the season remains buoyant in May due to school holidays and domestic leisure travel. Despite this, there is some unpredictability regarding future demand due to regional uncertainties. In response, the Department of Tourism has initiated meetings with key sectors such as hospitality, transport, travel services, and alternative accommodations to review booking patterns from May to July and create strategies to counteract any potential downturns.
