German-Swiss Liebherr to Establish Operations in Tupelo, Mississippi

Liebherr, the German-Swiss multinational equipment manufacturer, has announced plans to launch distribution and manufacturing operations in Tupelo, Mississippi, marking a significant phase in the company’s expansion efforts in the United States. The initiative comes with a hefty investment of $176 million and is expected to bring about 180 new jobs to Lee County, bolstering the local economy.

The ambitious project involves the development of over 1 million square feet of building space situated on an expansive 118-acre site at The Hive Business Park. This strategic move not only aims to enhance Liebherr’s service and delivery capabilities for its spare parts across the U.S. and other nations within the Americas but also seeks to broaden its operations within various segments of the Liebherr Group.

Joerg Stroebele of Liebherr-Logistics GmbH expressed enthusiasm for Tupelo as the chosen site, citing the city’s logistical offerings, geographical advantages, professional collaborations, and the supportive business environment in Mississippi as key factors influencing their decision. The culmination of these elements, alongside a skilled and educated workforce, presents an optimal setting for Liebherr’s growth and operational efficiencies.

To facilitate this major project, the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) is extending support through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive (MFLEX) program, accompanied by further assistance in constructing and outfitting the facilities. Additional backing from local entities, including Lee County, the city of Tupelo, and Accelerate MS, underscores a unified effort to welcome and integrate Liebherr into the local business fabric.

MDA Executive Director Bill Cork highlighted the importance of foreign direct investment as a pillar for the state’s economy. He praised the concerted efforts of MDA’s dedicated professionals and partners in attracting international powerhouses like Liebherr, emphasizing Mississippi’s appeal as a prime hub for global corporations.

The Liebherr Group, encompassing over 150 companies spread across more than 50 countries, operates in diverse segments such as Earthmoving, Deep Foundation Machines, Mobile and Crawler Cranes, Tower Cranes, Concrete Technology, and several others. The company’s multifaceted operations and its commitment to innovation and sustainability have solidified its status as a leader in the global marketplace.

Courtney Taylor, Executive Director of Accelerate MS, expressed excitement over Liebherr’s decision to embed its roots in Lee County, attributing the success to the collaborative efforts of regional workforce partners and the community at large. With a keen eye on the future, Accelerate MS is committed to supporting Liebherr’s employment objectives and ensuring a prosperous partnership as they embark on this new venture in Mississippi.

As Liebherr gears up to initiate its operations in Tupelo, the anticipation grows over the positive impacts this project will have on the local and state economies. This development signals not only a significant investment in the region’s industrial landscape but also a testament to the attractiveness of Mississippi as a location for international business expansion.
