NCERT has introduced a new chapter titled “From Ideas to Startups” in the Class 9 Social Science textbook, “Understanding Society: India and Beyond – Part 2.” The chapter familiarises students with how businesses are conceived, planned, and managed, highlighting India’s evolving startup ecosystem and the growing role of artificial intelligence in business decision-making. Real-life stories of Indian entrepreneurs bring these concepts to life for young learners.

What the Chapter Covers

The chapter guides students through the journey from spotting an opportunity to building a workable business plan. It explains how market understanding, sound planning, and continuous evaluation shape sustainable ventures. NCERT notes that the lesson explores:

  • Business opportunities and market understanding
  • Core functional areas of a business (such as operations, marketing, finance, and human resources)
  • Steps and structure of an effective business plan
  • India’s startup ecosystem and policy push supporting innovation
  • The role of AI in market analysis and business decision-making

Key Questions Students Will Explore

  • How does entrepreneurship shape society and the economy?
  • What are the main functional areas that keep a business running?
  • How is a practical, effective business plan designed and evaluated?

India’s Startup Ecosystem in Numbers

The textbook highlights how dramatically India’s startup landscape has expanded. A decade ago, the country had roughly 350–400 startups. Today, that figure has grown to nearly 2.3 lakh enterprises, placing India among the world’s top three startup ecosystems. The broader policy direction aims to bring research, industry, startups, and entrepreneurship onto a common platform to accelerate innovation and job creation.

Skills Students Will Build

  • Understanding market activity and customer needs
  • Spotting viable opportunities and assessing feasibility
  • Measuring performance and learning from outcomes

Stories That Inspire

Lijjat Papad: From INR 80 to a Household Name

One featured case is Lijjat Papad, which began in 1959 when seven women in a Mumbai chawl started making papads using a traditional recipe and INR 80 in borrowed capital. Without a factory, they worked from a terrace and their homes—kneading dough in the morning, rolling papads alongside daily chores, and delivering finished batches by evening. Their cooperative model and consistent quality helped transform a small initiative into a nationally recognised enterprise.

Mohan Singh Oberoi: From a Modest Salary to a Hospitality Pioneer

Another example follows Mohan Singh Oberoi, who began on a salary of INR 50 and went on to become a leading figure in Indian hospitality. Early in his journey, he mortgaged his wife’s jewellery to acquire his first hotel—an entrepreneurial risk that eventually led to the creation of a renowned hotel group.

Why This Update Matters

By integrating entrepreneurship into the social science curriculum, NCERT connects classroom learning with real-world economic activity. Students gain early exposure to problem-solving, planning, collaboration, and ethical decision-making—skills that are valuable whether they start a business or join one. With AI increasingly central to market research and operations, the chapter also encourages a practical, data-informed mindset.

“From Ideas to Startups” positions Class 9 learners to understand how innovation turns into enterprise, how businesses create value for society, and how responsible entrepreneurship can drive inclusive growth in India.
