Puy du Fou submits plans for £600m UK theme park | blooloop

Puy du Fou has filed a planning application for a £600 million, history-inspired theme park near Bicester in the UK. If approved, the destination will open in phases from 2029, ultimately bringing large-scale immersive experiences rooted in British history, alongside major economic and employment benefits for the region.

Project overview

The proposed park is designed as a full-scale resort celebrating British heritage through live entertainment and authentically themed environments. Plans outline four period villages and 13 live shows, drawing guests into key moments and stories from the nation’s past. The development also includes three hotels, each reflecting a distinct historical era, as well as a modern conference centre to attract business events.

Economic impact and jobs

Once fully operational, the project is forecast to deliver around £500 million each year to the local and regional economy. It is expected to directly employ approximately 2,000 people, with an additional 6,000 jobs supported in nearby hotels, restaurants, suppliers, and other businesses.

Visitor numbers and resort offering

The UK destination is projected to welcome about 1.47 million visitors annually. Guests will encounter a blend of large-scale shows, intimate historical settings, and themed hospitality. The three on-site hotels are planned to immerse visitors in different periods of British history, while the conference centre aims to broaden the resort’s appeal to corporate and events markets throughout the year.

Consultation and community engagement

Puy du Fou states that the application follows more than a year of consultation, including multiple in-person events and hundreds of stakeholder meetings. The feedback gathered informed the final proposals, with a focus on ensuring the project responds to local priorities and opportunities. The company highlights the site near Bicester as well-suited for creating an accessible, high-quality destination rooted in storytelling.

Sustainability and landscaping

Environmental considerations are central to the plans. The proposals feature extensive landscaping, including new ponds, lakes, and gardens, as well as over five kilometres of new hedgerows. The scheme also includes around 40 acres of biodiverse, species-rich wildflower meadows and the planting of 20,000 trees, aiming to boost local ecology and enhance the visitor experience.

Timeline and next steps

Subject to planning approval, the resort would launch in stages beginning in 2029. The phased approach is intended to manage construction impacts, build the local supply chain, and steadily grow employment and visitation as new shows and areas come online.

About Puy du Fou

Puy du Fou originated in France in 1978 and is known for historical live spectacles and immersive environments. The company expanded with a second destination in Toledo, Spain, in 2021. The planned UK venue marks the next chapter in its international development, adapting its model to celebrate British stories and settings.
