EU to reopen market for Brazil’s chicken meat after bird flu outbreak
The European Union is reopening its market to Brazilian chicken meat, lifting a ban imposed in May after an avian influenza outbreak in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, according to Brazil’s agriculture ministry.
The resumption will be phased in beginning Tuesday. Exports from all Brazilian regions except Rio Grande do Sul can restart immediately, while most areas within Rio Grande do Sul are slated to resume shipments on October 2, subject to sanitary compliance.
At the same time, China has initiated an audit of Brazil’s sanitary controls. This review is a key step toward potentially lifting China’s remaining restrictions on Brazilian chicken imports following the outbreak. China is the last major importer still maintaining limits tied to the incident.
Brazilian authorities stated they continue to monitor flocks and enforce biosecurity measures to meet international health standards and to support a smooth return to regular trade flows.
