The 2025 BMW X3 Plug-In Hybrid: A Glimpse of Elegance in Arctic Race Blue
The transformation of automotive preferences has been unmistakable, with diesel engines gradually taking a backseat. Once dominant in the European market in the mid-2010s, diesel sales have since declined. In this changing landscape, plug-in hybrids are emerging as a preferred option, with market share figures in early 2025 showing that PHEVs are almost matching diesel sales.
BMW caters to both diesel and plug-in hybrid enthusiasts with its fourth-generation X3. This luxurious SUV offers a range of engines including four- and six-cylinder diesels and an innovative electrified powertrain. Recently released images highlight the charm of the electrified variant, which has received a subtle name update to 30e xDrive from the previous xDrive30e.
In typical fashion, the automaker showcases a well-equipped version of the X3. The featured plug-in hybrid is adorned in the striking Arctic Race Blue metallic paint, complemented by 20-inch (1036 M) wheels. Its aesthetic appeal is further enhanced by a blacked-out kidney grille with illuminated contouring and adaptive LED matrix headlights that boast subtle blue accents.
An interesting shift is occurring with the inclusion of blue lighting details. Formerly an indication of laser headlights, these elements are evolving as BMW gradually phases out laser headlight technology, despite their pioneering introduction in the i8, overtaking competitors in the race for innovation.
Take a peek inside, and the evolution of the X3 becomes even more apparent. This model features iDrive 9 technology, complete with a rotary controller—a combination unique to the X3 within BMW’s lineup. It’s poised to hold this distinction, as BMW plans to roll out iDrive X. With the upcoming debut of the new iX3 in early September, the electric variant is set to depart from traditional dial controls, marking the end of an era for secondary physical control methods in their infotainment system.
For the Chinese market, BMW has designed a long-wheelbase version of the X3 to provide additional rear legroom, offering rear passengers a more relaxed seating angle and an extended thigh support feature. Regrettably, this variant, known as “G48,” won’t be available in Europe or North America, limiting this spacious luxury to the Chinese market.
