Make In India Boost: First Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility Inaugurated In Noida
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has inaugurated India’s first tempered glass manufacturing facility for mobile devices in Noida. Set up by Optiemus Electronics in partnership with US-based Corning Incorporated, the plant will produce high-performance cover glass under the globally recognized “Engineered by Corning” brand for both domestic and export markets.
Milestone for Make in India
Calling the launch a major boost for Make in India, the Minister said the development marks a key step toward self-reliance in electronics. He emphasized that India is progressing toward manufacturing every critical component of mobile devices—including chips, cover glass, laptops, and servers—positioning the country as a global hub for electronics manufacturing. He also noted that a Made in India chip will be introduced soon.
Scale, jobs, and technology
- Investment: Rs 70 crore in Phase 1, with an additional Rs 800 crore planned for Phase 2.
- Capacity: 25 million units per year initially, scaling up to 200 million units annually in Phase 2.
- Employment: Approximately 600 jobs in Phase 1, expanding to over 4,500 jobs in Phase 2.
- Manufacturing processes: Integrated shaping, precision polishing, chemical tempering, coating, and lamination under rigorous quality controls to deliver world-class tempered glass.
Electronics manufacturing momentum
India’s electronics production has grown sixfold over the last 11 years to reach Rs 11.5 lakh crore, with exports crossing Rs 3 lakh crore. The sector now supports around 2.5 million jobs, directly and indirectly, reflecting the expanding footprint of domestic manufacturing and assembly.
The Minister underscored India’s growing design capabilities, citing an IIT Madras–incubated startup that developed the country’s first microcontroller. He also pointed to Indian railway equipment being exported to Europe as a sign of rising engineering prowess and product credibility.
Economic context and vision
With GDP growth at 7.8% in Q1 FY26, India’s economy continues to show strong innovation-led momentum. Vaishnaw encouraged the country’s youth to contribute to Atmanirbhar Bharat and the long-term vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, highlighting the role of advanced manufacturing in driving growth and high-quality employment.
Why this facility matters
Localizing tempered glass production fills a critical gap in the device supply chain and reduces reliance on imports. By integrating advanced processes under one roof and building capacity for significant scale, the Noida facility strengthens India’s position in the global electronics ecosystem. It promises higher domestic value addition, improved time-to-market for device makers, and enhanced competitiveness for both local and export markets.
