PM Modi Touched by Subianto’s Jakarta Welcome

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jakarta on Monday to a warm, ceremonial reception, including an escort by Indonesian Air Force fighter jets as his aircraft entered Indonesian airspace. President Prabowo Subianto personally welcomed him at the airport—an expression of goodwill that the Indian leader said left him touched.

Cultural Diplomacy in Yogyakarta

Underscoring the cultural foundations of the relationship, the two leaders will visit the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta. The visit is intended to deepen people-to-people ties and highlight the civilizational connections that continue to shape contemporary cooperation between India and Indonesia.

Advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Both sides are set to review progress since elevating ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018 and to chart new initiatives across strategic, economic and people-centric domains. Discussions are expected to add momentum to collaboration in areas such as connectivity, trade facilitation, energy, technology, and security.

Critical Minerals in Focus

Cooperation on critical minerals is high on the agenda. Indonesia is a major global player in this space, holding a substantial share of the world’s nickel reserves and ranking among the top producers of copper, bauxite and tin. The visit aims to strengthen institutional mechanisms and trade channels that can support resilient and sustainable supply chains in this vital sector.

Trade and Investment Ties

Indonesia is India’s second-largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reported at USD 24.78 billion during the 2025–26 fiscal year. More than 130 Indian companies are active investors across diverse sectors of Indonesia’s economy. Both sides are expected to explore ways to expand bilateral commerce, encourage cross-border investments and facilitate greater ease of doing business.

Engaging the Indian Community

During his stay, the Prime Minister plans to interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Indonesia. Community voices have called for deeper cooperation across mining, energy, infrastructure and emerging technologies, reflecting the broad scope of opportunity within the partnership.

MAHASAGAR Vision and the Indo-Pacific

The visit to Indonesia forms part of a three-nation tour that also includes Australia and New Zealand. The broader agenda aligns with India’s Act East Policy and the MAHASAGAR Vision—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions—India’s institutional framework to foster security, stability and inclusive growth across the maritime domain. The tour underlines India’s outlook for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity

The Prime Minister is in Indonesia from July 6 to 8 at the invitation of President Subianto. This engagement marks his fourth visit to the maritime neighbor and the first bilateral visit since ties were formally elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2018. Beyond reviewing bilateral ties, the agenda includes reinforcing mechanisms that support critical mineral supply chains, boosting trade flows and enhancing cultural and educational exchanges.

With a warm welcome in Jakarta, cultural outreach in Yogyakarta and a forward-looking agenda on critical minerals, trade and regional security, the visit seeks to consolidate a partnership that is strategic in scope and people-centric in substance—setting the stage for deeper collaboration across Southeast Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific.
