Business success and social prosperity must grow together

NOMPILO MORAFO | Business success and social prosperity are bound together

Across Africa, hope is visible in community centres and township hubs where young people share internet connections while pursuing ambitious goals. It can also be seen in busy markets, where a mobile phone has become a till, bank, shopfront and gateway to greater economic opportunity.

But hope must be matched by opportunity. Governments are investing in infrastructure, education and the digital economy despite limited resources and competing priorities. The scale of the continent’s needs, however, is greater than any government or institution can address alone. Africa’s leading companies must also play a meaningful role.

This is not simply about charity. The continent needs sustainable, profitable businesses that are committed to serving communities over the long term. Companies cannot invest in essential infrastructure and services without generating returns. At the same time, they cannot remain successful if the markets and societies they serve are struggling.

Business success and social prosperity are therefore inseparable. When young people lack access to quality education, valuable talent remains undeveloped. Economic exclusion can contribute to instability and uncertainty, while inadequate infrastructure limits opportunity for individuals and enterprises alike.

The greatest impact is often achieved when companies apply their expertise and resources to social challenges that are closely connected to their core capabilities.

Purpose connects growth with social impact

A clear corporate purpose guides strategic decisions, encourages innovation and supports sustainable growth. It can also inspire employees by connecting their daily work to a broader ambition for the communities they serve.

Purpose strengthens trust when a company’s actions match its promises. Customers and communities increasingly assess businesses not only by their products and advertising, but also by their practices, treatment of employees and contribution to society.

MTN Group describes its purpose as leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress. With more than 317 million customers, its long-term performance is closely linked to the continent’s economic and social development. Supporting Africa’s prosperity and delivering shareholder value are not competing responsibilities; each depends on the other.

Expanding mobile internet access promotes digital inclusion. Mobile financial services also help people participate more fully in the formal economy, enabling customers to make payments, save money and conduct business more efficiently.

Collaboration is essential

Challenges such as unemployment, migration, social cohesion, climate resilience and education are often treated primarily as public policy matters. Yet they also have major implications for companies, affecting consumer confidence, workforce development, investment conditions and long-term stability.

Addressing these issues requires cooperation among businesses, governments, public institutions and civil society. Constructive engagement helps organisations identify shared priorities and direct their capabilities towards areas where they can make the greatest difference.

Employee volunteerism is one way companies can convert purpose into practical action. Since 2007, MTN’s annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care initiative has mobilised employees across its markets to contribute their time and professional expertise to pressing social challenges.

Under the theme “Expanding equitable health for every community,” more than 6,300 employees contributed over 50,000 volunteer hours and reached more than 400,000 direct beneficiaries. The focus on healthcare became particularly relevant amid public health threats affecting parts of the continent.

Using business capabilities to meet community needs

The strongest initiatives were those that combined volunteer effort with technology, connectivity and partnerships.

In Eswatini, MTN partnered with The Luke Commission to establish a medical drone link to a remote clinic. The project reduced medicine delivery times from as long as four hours by road to approximately 30 minutes.

In Uganda, volunteers supported maternal and child healthcare while providing community health workers with smartphones and digital skills training. In Benin, teams worked with the Ministry of Health on blood donation campaigns, surgeries for children and improvements to medical facilities.

These programmes demonstrate that social impact and commercial value can reinforce one another. Applying a company’s core strengths to genuine community needs can improve access to essential services while strengthening trust, deepening stakeholder relationships and protecting the social licence on which sustainable growth depends.

Progress depends on shared prosperity

Africa’s future will not be shaped by governments or businesses acting in isolation. It will depend on partnerships founded on the understanding that economic development and social progress must advance together.

Companies that endure will be judged by more than the financial value they create. Their legacy will also reflect the opportunities they unlock, the trust they earn and the societies they help build.

Supporting inclusive prosperity is therefore not separate from good business. It is one of the foundations of long-term commercial success.
