Qatar accelerates shift to smart, sustainable transport system
Qatar is fast-tracking the development of a smart, integrated and sustainable transportation ecosystem as the second edition of the Autonomous e-Mobility Forum (AEMOB) opened in Doha. The three-day event, hosted and strategically partnered by the Ministry of Transport (MoT), convenes international and regional experts to explore the future of autonomous and electric mobility and the technologies reshaping the sector.
The forum, held at the Qatar National Convention Centre from September 7–9, was inaugurated by the Ministry of Transport Undersecretary H E Mohammed Abdullah Al-Maadeed, with senior officials from the Ministry of Municipality and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, along with leaders from across the transportation industry, in attendance.
A strategic industry in transformation
In his keynote, Al-Maadeed underscored that transportation has evolved beyond a support service to become a strategic industry and a key driver of national development. He highlighted how the sector now directly contributes to economic competitiveness, operational efficiency across industries, and overall quality of life—especially as national priorities increasingly centre on efficiency, sustainability, and integration.
Al-Maadeed identified the shift to electric mobility and autonomous driving systems as defining features of the industry’s future. He also emphasized the need to confront core challenges, including energy demands, digital infrastructure readiness, safety and reliability, regulatory frameworks, and the cultivation of national capabilities to localize and sustain advanced technologies.
Addressing these challenges, he said, requires a holistic, coordinated approach that brings together government, the private sector, and research institutions in innovative partnerships, rather than isolated or piecemeal solutions.
From building to optimizing infrastructure
Guided by Qatar’s national vision and leadership, the country has invested in modern road networks, a world-class metro system, advanced public transit fleets, and integrated ports, airports, and logistics zones. With these foundations in place, the MoT is now pivoting—aligned with the Qatar Third National Development Strategy (NDS3)—from major infrastructure construction to maximizing the performance and utilization of existing assets.
This next phase focuses on expanding electric mobility, advancing digital infrastructure, deploying intelligent transportation systems, and preparing the regulatory and operational groundwork for autonomous vehicles. The goal is a seamless, multi-modal transport system that enhances connectivity, efficiency, and sustainability.
Showcasing innovation and policy momentum
Al-Maadeed also opened the forum’s exhibition, where officials toured displays featuring the latest in autonomous systems, e-mobility solutions, and smart transport technologies. Day one included several panel discussions—among them an MoT-led session titled “Integration, Planning and Sustainability – A Future Look”—that highlighted Qatar’s drive to build a smart, integrated, and sustainable ecosystem where all modes of transport work together.
Global expertise and a multidisciplinary program
This year’s forum brings together more than 40 speakers from government, industry, academia, technology, and research. Across its professional conference, the program features over 50 keynotes and panel discussions spanning 10 dedicated tracks. Topics include technology and innovation, policy and regulation, sustainability, infrastructure, research and development, public adoption, and real-world deployment of autonomous and electric mobility.
Community-building and entrepreneurship
Beyond the conference sessions, the forum expands into a robust community program designed to empower emerging talent and catalyze innovation. Activities such as the SME Competition, Startup Showcase, and 3-Minute Thesis Challenge create platforms for entrepreneurs, startups, students, young professionals, and innovators to share ideas and contribute to the sector’s future direction.

The exhibition at QNCC features more than 20 spaces dedicated to autonomous vehicles, electric mobility solutions, smart infrastructure technologies, and cutting-edge innovations.
